Azerbaijani President: “Political relations between Azerbaijan and Pakistan are at a very high level”

Pakistan is the first country officially recognized the Khojaly genocide

“We are very grateful to Pakistan for the fact that this country is one of the few countries that have not established any diplomatic relations with Armenia because of the continued occupation of our lands”, said President Ilham Aliyev after the ceremony of signing the documents with President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Mamnoon Hussain

President Ilham Aliyev noted that Azerbaijani and Pakistani people have lived for centuries in peace, cooperation and friendship: “For centuries we have supported each other and lived as brothers. Today, two independent countries create a new form of cooperation. This cooperation is based on our historical heritage, traditions, religion, and strategic interests.

The document signed today between me and Mr. President, is a declaration on strategic partnership between our countries. We can say this document, in fact, covers, all the areas of our cooperation and is an important step in the further development of our strategic relations. We are friends, brothers, strategic partners, and will continue to cooperate for the sake of our peoples and countries, as well as regional security and stability.”

Azerbaijani President said that political relations between countries are at a very high level. “It is clearly demonstrated by the official visit of the President of Pakistan to Azerbaijan and just signed documents. We support each other in all international organizations and it will continue.

Today we discussed with the President issues of bilateral and multilateral importance, in particular, our cooperation in international institutions. We support each other in the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and other international institutions. We are very grateful to Pakistan for its continued support to Azerbaijan in the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

As you know, internationally recognized Azerbaijani lands are under Armenian occupation over 20 years. Armenia conducted a policy of ethnic cleansing against Azerbaijanis, and as a result, more than 1 million Azerbaijanis became refugees and IDPs. Now 20 percent of our territory is under occupation. Armenians committed the Khojaly genocide by killing innocent children, women and elderly people just because of their ethnicity. Azerbaijani people are very grateful to Pakistani brothers, as Pakistan is the first country officially recognized the Khojaly genocide. Khojaly genocide is recognized by more than 10 countries, but Pakistan was the first country.

We are very grateful to Pakistan for the fact that this country is one of the few countries that have not established any diplomatic relations with Armenia because of the continued occupation of our lands. This is brotherly attitude. This is the symbol of real support. Our government and our people are very grateful to your government and people for this position. UN Security Council resolutions demand the unconditional and immediate withdrawal of Armenian forces from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. Unfortunately, these resolutions are not fulfilled.

Azerbaijan, in turn, has always supported Pakistan on Jammu and Kashmir issue, its regulation in accordance with relevant UN documents. In other words, cooperation between our countries has a solid historical foundation, and today we support each other to protect our national interests in the international arena.”

According to President Ilham Aliyev the prospects of cooperation in the economic sphere were also discussed: “I am glad that Mr. President is accompanied by a large group of representatives of the business community of Pakistan. Tomorrow we will together take part in a business forum. We hope that this business forum will create additional opportunities for economic cooperation and contacts between business circles, mutual investment and joint ventures. Today we discussed this issue at a meeting with delegations. Tomorrow the delegation will continue to work in this direction and will report to us the results.

We actively cooperate in the military sphere. Today we discussed the next plans for cooperation in the defense industry. Pakistan has made significant progress in the defense industry. We in Azerbaijan, of course, also create a defense industry. We want to consolidate our efforts to reach out to modern technology, but also get the chance to work together in the field of research, scientific and defense technologies in order to upgrade our capacity.”

The Head of the State noted that the humanitarian sphere covers a significant part of the cooperation: “They are culture, science, social spheres. All this is very important for our peoples and countries. We are making a great contribution to the strengthening of Islamic solidarity. Azerbaijan and Pakistan will continue to play an important role in this direction.”
