Azerbaijani President: IS ‘fruit’ of policy carried out in Middle East over last ten years; “In order to assess the situation properly, it’s necessary to first have an accurate notion of how this illegal organization emerged and from where it came out”

Baku: “Terrorists can not be divided into good and bad ones. So that a good terrorist is one that is fighting against your enemy and a bad terrorist is fighting against you. To my mind, this is the primary issue to be resolved. This kind of situations will always appear unless the world’s leading countries don’t resolve this issue and arrive at a common agreement in the fight against radicalism and terrorism”, said President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev while answering a question about the Islamic State (former name Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in an interview with Russia-24 TV channel of All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company.

The head of state noted that in order to assess the situation properly, it’s necessary to first have an accurate notion of how this illegal organization emerged and from where it came out.

“They did not fly in from another planet. This all is the consequence of the events took place in the Middle East at least over the last ten years. This is the “fruit” of the policy carried out in the Middle East. It proves once again that we need to be very cautious and visionary in the matter of supporting radical and fanatic groups,” he added.

The Azerbaijani president said education is the main guarantee against radicalism, noting that there are no sources of radicalism in Azerbaijan and the country’s borders are well protected.

“For us, of course, I would not say that it is a big threat. However, we will follow this issue. As you mentioned, it isn’t far from our borders. There are no domestic sources of radicalism in Azerbaijan. Of course, Azerbaijan is a Muslim country, the community is committed to its traditions and religion. Islam is a religion of peace. Our national and religious values demand such a peaceful approach toward resolution of all issues. At the same time, Azerbaijan is a secular country with a secular society, modern state with high level of education. Education is the main guarantee against radicalism. A potential threat can’t be observed in a country having 100 percent literacy rate and literate society. However, we are part of the region and concerned over processes taking place in the Middle East and outside our borders. It can have a negative impact on the public consciousness, individuals may be in danger. However, our borders are well protected,” he said.
