Azerbaijan returns 28 prisoners to Iran; 12 Azerbaijani citizens are serving a sentence in Iran

Baku: 28 Iranian citizens jailed in Azerbaijan have today been handed over to their country through the Astara border checkpoint to serve the remaining term of their sentences, Nasir Vatan, consul general of Iran’s embassy in Azerbaijan, told APA.

He said 28 Iranian prisoners were returned to their country in accordance with an agreement between Azerbaijan and Iran, noting that another 52 persons are also expected to be given to Iran in the near future.

“The decision about handing over these persons had been made four month ago, but it took place today. Each of them has a few years of their imprisonment terms left. They will serve their remaining sentences in Iran. There are currently 130 Iranian citizens overall in Azerbaijani prisons. In Iran’s prisons, 12 Azerbaijani citizens are serving their sentences. All necessary measures are underway to bring them to Azerbaijan,” said Nasir Vatan.
