Azerbaijan launches ‘border-shield’ operations at border with Russia

Baku: Azerbaijan has launched large-scale operations in districts bordering with Russia.

The operations are being conducted in the north and northwest of Azerbaijan. Russian law enforcement agencies are also involved in the operations called “border-shield”.

Local residents told APA that police posts have been set up in the districts of Balakan, Gakh, and Sheki due to the operations. Police officers are checking cars entering and leaving.

Law enforcement agencies told APA the operations, which aim to combat transnational organized crimes, illegal migration, and the smuggling of drugs and weapons and ammunition along the border between the two countries, are taking place on the basis of a joint agreement reached by Azerbaijan and Russia.

The operations will continue till May 23.
