Alimardan bey Topchubashov’s bust, exhibition unveiled in Saint Petersburg

A bust and exhibition dedicated to the life and activity of Azerbaijani politician Alimardan bey Topchubashov was unveiled in Russian Saint Petersburg city.

The opening was held as part of the 40th plenary session of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, AzerTag state news agency reported.

Deputy Secretary General of the Council of the Interparliamentary Assembly, representative of the Azerbaijani Parliament in the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly Aydin Jafarov thanked the Azerbaijani government, Foreign Ministry and the consulate general of the country in Saint Petersburg for their support to setting up the bust of Topchubashov in the city and organizing the exhibition.

On behalf of Speaker of the Council of Federation Valentina Matviyenko, Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council of Russia Ilyas Umakhanov thanked Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev for supporting the project of making the bust of Topchubashov presented to the Interparliamentary Assembly.

Chairman of the Azerbaijani Parliament Committee, Head of the parliamentary delegation of Azerbaijan Arif Rahimzadeh informed the participants about the life and fruitful activity of Topchubashov as chairman of the parliament of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic and head of the Muslim group in the State Duma of the Russian Empire.

Chief of the Department of Public Affairs and Information of Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry Javanshir Mammadov spoke about the life and multifaceted career of Topchubashov.

The event was also attended by leadership and representatives of the Interparliamentary Assembly, parliamentary delegation of the Azerbaijani Parliament, Deputy Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Russia Gudsi Osmanov, Consul General of Azerbaijan in Saint-Petersburg Elshad Gulamov, as well as CIS parliamentarians and representatives of the Russian media.

Alimardan bey Topchubashov was one of Azerbaijan’s outstanding politicians, chairman of the parliament of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, and head of the Muslim group in the State Duma of the Russian Empire of the First Convocation (1906-1917).

Topchubashov, one of the greatest persons nurtured by Azerbaijani history acted as the leader of Russian Turks, the Muslim peoples of the empire and Caucasian immigration.

With his political activities, he gave a national nature to cultural awakening and became one of the creators of a new Azerbaijan. Topchubashov made an invaluable contribution to formation of the Azerbaijani statehood. He also had a great role in the process of democratization of the Democratic Republic.
