92,000 die of cancer each year in Turkey

ISTANBUL (CIHAN)- According to a report released by the Turkish Association for Cancer Research and Control (TKASK), there are 148,000 cancer cases diagnosed annually in Turkey and 92,000 patients with cancer lose their lives each year.

TKASK chairman Professor Tezer Kutluk said that the types of cancer with the highest morbidity in Turkey were lung, breast, prostate and colorectal cancer.

“Using tobacco products, a lack of physical exercise, high consumption of alcohol and being exposed to harmful solar rays of the main known causes of cancer. One third of cancer types can be avoided with a healthy lifestyle,” said Kutluk.

The TKASK chairman added that 14 million people are diagnosed with cancer every year around the world with 8.2 million sufferers losing their lives annually.

“The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that by the year 2030, the number of people who will lose their lives because of cancer will go up to 12 million annually. We should be aware of the fact that cancer cases have risen by 11 percent in the last four years,” said Kutluk.
