16 detained in second wave of İzmir-based police operation

A total of 16 people, including police chiefs, were detained on Thursday morning in an İzmir based police operation, which targeted an alleged spy ring whose members stand accused of obtaining classified military information to sell to third parties.

The İzmir based operation was also conducted in Agri, Antalya, Bingol, Eskisehir, İstanbul, Kilis, Kirklareli, Kocaeli, Mardin, Mugla, Nigde, Siirt, Sivas, Sanliurfa and Van on the order of İzmir Deputy Public Prosecutor Okan Bato.

The Cihan news agency reported that there are capture warrants for eight more suspects still outstanding and that police are searching for them.

The first wave of the operation was conducted on Nov. 3, when a total of 44 people were detained as part of the military espionage probe.
