112 detainees tortured in first 3 months of 2014, CHP says

A total of 112 detainees were subjected to torture and maltreatment in the first three months of 2014, according to a human rights report by the Republican People’s Party (CHP) published on Monday.

The same report said that the three-month period saw human rights violations in the cases of 54 people who died in work-related accidents, eight soldiers who committed suicide, six people who were killed in prison and two who died in unsolved murders.

The report, which was prepared by CHP Deputy Chairman Sezgin Tanrıkulu, listed human rights violations that took place in Turkey between January and March under various categories. The report includes accusations that the government has been suspending basic rights and freedoms since last summer’s anti-government Gezi Park protests. The report also claimed that Turkey has seen a rise in human rights violations in 2014 compared to the previous year.
