US, Afghan forces recover former Pakistani PM's son

WASHINGTON, May 10 (KUNA) — US special operations and Afghan national security forces successfully recovered Ali Haider Gilani, the son of former Pakistani Prime Minister, Yousaf Raza Gilani, in a joint operation on Tuesday, the State Department announced.
Gilani was found in Afghanistan’s eastern Paktika province after being held hostage since May of 2013 by an Al Qaeda linked group. Senior officials have been in contact with Afghan and Pakistani authorities on the operation as well as on the repatriation of Gilani, State Department Press Relations chief Elizabeth Trudeau told reporters.
“This raid demonstrates the growing capabilities and effectiveness of the Afghan security forces and is an excellent example of the strong security and intelligence partnership between Afghan and US forces in counterterrorism operations against the remnants of Al Qaida,” she said.
Commenting on the mission, US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter said in a statement that the US “will work with the governments of Afghanistan and Pakistan to return him home safely after he receives a medical evaluation.” He also commended the US and Afghan special operations on the success of the morning raid, which was conducted in the morning.
