UPR Standing Committee organises consultative meeting with civil society organisations.

The Secretariat of the Universal Periodic Review, UPR, Standing Committee of the United Nations, UN, Human Rights Council today conducted, at the office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Dubai, an open consultative meeting with representatives of civil society organisations and associations in the UAE, to present the country’s efforts to prepare the draft of its third UPR report and to monitor the implementation of the approved recommendations from the discussion session of the second report in June 2013.

The final version of the report will be created through deliberating with local civil society organisations and associations and exchanging points of view with regards to the draft report and how to implement the approved recommendations.

The consultative meeting was led by Dr. Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the UPR Standing Committee.

Dr. Gargash presented the UAE’s efforts and accomplishments during the previous four years in many areas, including women’s empowerment, children’s rights, and the country’s fulfilment of its international human rights commitments.

He also explained the country’s related national policies and strategies, including the National Strategy for Empowerment of Emirati Women in the UAE 2015-2021.

Dr. Gargash stressed that these successes were achieved due to the country’s wise leadership and the combined efforts of government authorities and civil society organisations and associations while highlighting the role of civil society and its effectiveness in strengthening and protecting human rights.

Dr. Abdul Rahim Yousef Al Awadi, Advisor to the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, commented on several related federal laws and decrees and their contribution to strengthening and protecting human rights.

He also highlighted the UAE’s stature in various international indicators, as the country came in the first position in the “Rule of Law Indicator in the Middle East Region 2016” and was the leading Arab country in the “World Happiness Indicator 2017.”

Mubarak Mohammed Al Hammadi, member of the Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, presented a paper, titled, “Informing About the Process of the Universal Periodic Review of the Human Rights Council,” and explained the various stages of preparing the draft of the third UPR report.

The deliberations between governments and civil society organisations and associations on the draft of their third UPR report is the main process in creating the final version of the report, which will be presented by the countries concerned to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
