New York – A pedestrian died after a driver ploughed into a pedestrian-filled sidewalk in New York’s Times Square midday Thursday.

Another 19 people were injured, the city’s fire department reported.

A man was taken into custody by the New York Police Department after the crash. There were no passengers in the car, according to local media reports.

Photos circulating on social media show a car that had mounted the sidewalk and crashed, as well as images said to show people being treated for injuries.

The New York City police department said the crash is “believed to be an isolated incident,” but that investigations are ongoing.

The fire department was referring to the incident as a motor vehicle accident.

The car was travelling against the flow of traffic at about 48 kilometres an hour, according to a witness interviewed on Fox News.

The witness said he saw pedestrians running from the crash site and four people lying on the sidewalk after the car rammed into them.

Manhattan’s Times Square, which is at the cross-section of Broadway and 7th Avenue, is one of the city’s biggest tourist attractions.

Around 300,000 people pass through the square every day, according to figures from the Times Square Alliance.

Streets in the area were cordoned off while emergency services work at the scene.
