TWO DEAD, SEVERAL MISSING AS BRIDGE COLLAPSES IN WESTERN INDIA

Goa – At least two person has died while over 30 others are feared missing after a bridge collapsed in western Indian tourist state of Goa on Thursday evening.

A large number of people had gathered on the bridge following reports that someone had jumped off it in a suicide attempt. The Portuguese-era bridge had been closed for vehicular traffic some years ago. Only pedestrians were using it, police said.

The police said around 20 of them swam to safety. Another 14 people were rescued and taken to nearby hospitals, whereas two bodies were retrieved from the river.

The Indian Navy has been requested to assist in the rescue operations and the divers have rushed to the spot. The fire and emergency services has begun the search operation.
