Third round of Lebanon's municipal, mayoral elections begins

BEIRUT, May 22 (KUNA) — The third phase of Lebanon’s municipal and mayoral elections kicked off on Sunday to choose councils for 263 towns, villages and cities in the South and Nabatieh governorates.
Lebanon’s Ministry of Interior in a statement said that 3,033 ballot boxes were ready to receive casts from 852,000 voters, adding that 40 municipalities out of 263 have won by acclamation in the two governorates.
Meanwhile, Jezzine district is currently running a by-election at the same time to fill a parliamentary seat left vacant since MP Michel Helou from the Free Patriotic Movement who died in June 2014.
The first and second phases were held during the last two weeks in governorates of Beirut, Bekaa Valley, Mount Lebanon and Baalbek-Hermel. The fourth and concluding round is set for next Sunday in North and Akkar governorates. (end) wsm.ag
