Lisbon, – At least six people have been confirmed dead after an explosion late Tuesday in a fireworks factory in northern Portugal.

The sixth body was found Wednesday, Interior Ministry official Jorge Gomes said at the accident site in Ferreiros de Avoes, some 350 kilometres north-east of Lisbon.

The search continues for one person who is still missing, he said, adding that the victims, aged between 22 and 52 years, were all factory employees.

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa visited the site of the accident Wednesday to offer his condolences. Speaking to journalists, the president called for better inspection and safety measures, dpa reported.

A three-day period of mourning was announced in the region.(QNA)
