Security operation kills 73 rebels in E. Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD, June 30 (KUNA) — Around 73 Taliban rebels were killed and several others injured in a military operation supported by air strikes in Afghanistan’s eastern Nuristan province, said officials on Thursday.
A statement by 201 Selab Military Corps confirmed that nearly 73 Taliban militants were killed and 26 others wounded in the operation conducted in Kamdish district of Nuristan after dozens Taliban fighters attacked the security forces’ outpost in the area. Air Force supported the ground forces in the battle, the statement said. No casualty was incurred to security forces and civilians in the clash, it added.
Meanwhile, Afghan Ministry of Defense in a statement said that the operation was supported through air strikes by Afghan Air Force and foreign troops.
A spokesman for the 3rd Unit of Selab Militray Corps, Major Haroon Yousafzai said that the insurgents wanted to create disturbance in the district through coordinated attacks on check posts.
Provincial Governor Hafiz Abdul Qayyum also confirmed the operation claiming that a notorious Taliban commander was among the dead.
The operation came at a time when Afghan and foreign security forces have intensified their operations and air strikes across Afghanistan to gain and maintain security control in the country. (end)
