Russia Visit Aims to Save Syrian Political Process, HE FM Says

Moscow, – HE Foreign Minister of Qatar Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said Friday he conveyed the message of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani to the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin regarding regional development, especially in Syria.

His Excellency said in a press conference with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov that the visit to Russia was to discuss saving the political process in Syria in light of the latest escalation. His Excellency said that Russia, along with the United States led the international group that calls for a political resolution to the Syrian crisis in accordance with UN Security Council resolution no. 2254.

HE the Foreign Minister added that Qatar and Russia are in agreement on maintaining the unity of Syrian land. His Excellency then highlighted that the Syrian people have been struggling with the crisis for five years, as a result the international community must work strongly together to reach a resolution.

HE the Foreign Minister said that the Qatari administration expressed its views to its Russian counterpart. His Excellency stressed that Qatar’s position from doesn’t see a role for Bashar Al Assad in the future of Syria. His Excellency added that the Qatari position also stresses that it is the Syrian people that must determine its future through a political process. HE the Foreign Minister said that Qatar realized that the Syrian regime was not serious enough about negotiations, based on their behavior during the Geneva meetings.

HE the Foreign Minister said that the meeting with Putin also discussed developments in Yemen, Libya and the means to push peace talks in the Middle-East in light of Israel’s expanding illegal settlement policy.
