QATAR PARTICIPATES IN BIO-DIVESITY, BIOSAFETY CONFERENCE

CANCUN, Mexico, – Qatar is taking part in the 13th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, the eighth meeting for Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, and the second meeting for Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources.

The meetings kicked off in the Mexican city of Cancun, in the presence of nearly 10,000 participants, representing 190 countries from party states, observer states and international organisations.

The conference of the parties is a platform for holding negotiations on the conventions and commitments that give momentum to the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, unifying global efforts for the sustainable management of natural resources, and urging governments and all stakeholders to take appropriate measures, to disseminate the benefits of the conservation of biological diversity and its components.

The 13th meeting will also be an opportunity to match plans, programmes and commitments, adopted in the framework of international conventions with the principles and approaches set out in the 2030 sustainable development plan, in order to strengthen political support for efforts at all levels to achieve sustainable management of natural resources.

Participants will stress the integrating policies contained in the 2030 sustainable development plan, enhances the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable use in the different sectors, with an emphasis on the role that indigenous peoples and local communities can play, in the supervision of renewable natural resources and sustainably managing them.
