QATAR CHAMBER STRESSES KEENNESS TO EMPOWER PRIVATE SECTOR

DOHA, — Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman, Sheikh Khalifa Jassim Al-Thani said the Chamber’s efforts over the past year focused on the empowerment of the private sector to play a bigger role in line with Qatar’s vision aimed at achieving economic diversification.

Promoting the private sector and increasing its contribution to the GDP (gross domestic product) has been the main concern of the Chamber, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported him as saying at the Qatar Chamber’s General Assembly meeting held here on Thursday.

In this regard, Qatar Chamber has multiplied meetings with trade delegations and exerted efforts in the organisation and coordination of these meetings which had benefitted the business community in Qatar, he said.

In 2015, Qatar Chamber hosted more than 70 trade delegation from various countries around the world, he added.

Qatar Chamber has also organised various exhibitions and successful conferences which reflected their outputs and recommendations on the business environment in Qatar, he said, referring to the 4th “Made in Qatar” Exhibition, the 1st Gulf Economic Forum, the GCC Businesswomen Forum and “Made in China” Exhibition which attracted a large number of Chinese companies.

Al-Thani stressed the global economic crisis associated with a decline in oil prices and coupled with the decline in global growth rates and the instability that has dominated the entire Arab region, casted a shadow over the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) economies in general.

The crisis might cause a decline in growth rates, he said, noting that a positive exploitation of their drawbacks could lead to a real diversification of the sources of national income and achieve strong growth for the role of the private sector.
