Mogherini meets Syrian opposition women delegation

BRUSSELS, June 27 (KUNA) — EU High Representative Federica Mogherini met in Brussels Monday the Syrian High Negotiations Committee’s (HNC) Women Consultative Committee to exchange views on developments in Syria and the political process.
Mogherini in a statement expressed her full support for the UN-brokered talks in Geneva and the work of the HNC, including its general coordinator Riad Hijab, as the opposition delegation at the talks.
She encouraged the opposition to step up their coordination and preparations for negotiating a peaceful solution to the Syrian conflict.
Mogherini stressed that conditions need to be created for serious and direct talks to agree on a credible and inclusive transitional governance.
Meanwhile, the Syrian women delegation also met Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders, EU Humanitarian Commissioner Christos Stylianides, and representatives from EU Member States.
Speaking after their meetings, delegation member Bassma Kodmani said: “Our message to our European partners is that Europe has a vital role to play – as a key political actor – in resolving the crisis in Syria.
“The threat of extremism and the refugee crisis are Europe’s problems, and neither can be resolved in isolation of the wider conflict in Syria. A comprehensive European approach is urgently needed to revive the diplomatic process,” she added.
The HNC delegation also included Alise Mofrej, Negotiator of HNC in Geneva, Fadwa Mahmoud, Activist and former Syrian detainee, and Aziza Jaloud, Activist, and former Syrian detainee. (end)
