Iraqi FM says more int'l support needed to defeat IS

BAGHDAD, May 8 (KUNA) — Iraq renewed Sunday its calls for the international community to help the country defeat the so-called Islamic State (IS).
This statement came during Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim Al-Jaafari’s meeting with US Assistant Secretary of State Thomas Shannon.
Al-Jaafari said that Iraq was in need of such assistance in order to face the security and economic challenges caused by the presence of IS in Iraq and also dwindling global oil prices.
On the efforts against IS, the Iraqi Foreign Minister stressed that the armed forces and allies were making progress in the fight against terrorist elements, adding that the international coalition played an important part in achieving gains against the enemy.
On his part, Shannon reiterated the US strong desire to enable the Iraqi forces to defeat IS.
The US official took a chance to laud the Iraqi government and people for their recent accomplishments against the terror created by IS, indicating that such progress made it possible for people to return to their homes and towns. (end) ahh.gta
