Int'l community should be more responsible with refugees – official

ISTANBUL, May 23 (KUNA) — Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has called on the international community to be more responsible in bearing the burdens resulted by the refugees’ crisis.
Bearing these burdens is a humanitarian responsibility and a mean to prevent futher developments of crises, Cavusoglu said Monday during a meeting held on the sidelines of the World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul.
“We’ve seen, in recent developments on Syrian refugees’ migration to Europe, how some countries ignored the situation until the crisis reached its limits,” he added.
The Turkish minister also stressed the importance of discussing the main causes behind humanitarian crises around the world, and finding ways to intervene and resolve them, noting that millions of people are forced to leave their homes due to civil wars, religious conflicts, and radical discrimination.
It is important to eliminate the factors and conditions that lead to poverty, famine, and drought, he said, noting that these humanitarian disasters could be alleviated through providing better aid.
The World Humanitarian Summit kicked off earlier in Istanbul and included seven roundtable sessions, 15 closed-door meetings, and 120 events. (end)
