EIGHT STUDENTS DROWN OFF INDIA’S MAHARASHTRA COAST

New Delhi, – Eight students from an engineering college drowned off a beach in India’s Maharashtra state Saturday.

The students were part of a group of almost 50 who had come from the Maratha Engineering College in Belgaum to the Wayari beach for a picnic, police said.

“Some 30 of them decided to take a swim even though locals had warned them of strong currents during high tide,” an official at the Sindhudurg district police control room, said.

Local fishermen rescued three people and later found the bodies of the eight students, three of whom were female, the police said. The rest managed to swim to safety. (QNA)
