Customs seize 84 gold bars from passenger at Dhaka airport

Abul Hossain, 30, who hails from Comilla, was found in possession of the contraband gold, said Customs Intelligence chief Moinul Khan.

Hossain landed on Saturday morning in flight coming from Qatar.

“The gold bars were concealed in his waist,” said Khan.

He said the value of the seized contraband was estimated at around Tk 45 million.

Bangladesh has increasingly become a conduit for contraband gold smuggled into the region with an eye on high demand for the yellow metal in India.

Huge seizures have been reported from airports and other places in Bangladesh but many say the seizures are just the tip of an iceberg.
