CHS STUDENTS WIN AT QCS AWARDS FOR THE WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY COMPETITION

CHS Public Health students won in Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) Awards for the World No Tobacco Day Schools/Universities/Corporates Competition held on May 18.

The students won the first three prizes for their health educational videos and animations. They were Noor Al Hussaini and Ekram Al Mushaddani (first prize – QR15,000), Nada Arar (second prize – QR10,000), and Ahlam Al Naqeeb (third prize – QR5,000).

The competition included two areas — health educational videos and motion graphic-animations. It aimed to increase awareness about the harmful effects of smoking and the importance of quitting smoking and maintaining a healthy lifestyle without smoking.

Commenting on the event, CHS Dean and QU Biomedical Research Center (BRC) Director Dr Asmaa Al-Thani said: The College of Health Sciences always encourages students to participate in these competitions to communicate health messages that help educate the Qatari society, enhance disease prevention, and support the health care sector in Qatar through raising healthy generations.

CHS Lecturer Dr Ghadir Al-Jayyousi said: The participation of public health students who are part of the Qatari society in generating health education materials is a crucial factor in producing effective materials that prevent smoking and/or help people quit smoking.

Noor Al Hussaini and Ekram Al Mushaddani said: Tobacco smoking is a serious health issue which affects the smoker and the society. In our video, we applied the key concepts learned in health education methods to raise awareness about the serious consequences of this behavior. We received encouragement and motivation from CHS Public Health Department and we look forward to participating in other competitions in the future to improve our health communication skills.
