BEIRUT, May 24 (KUNA) — British Minister for Syrian Refugees Richard Harrington met Tuesday with Lebanese Interior and Municipalities Minister Nuhad Mashnouq to discuss the British plan to receive 20,000 Syrian refugees from Lebanon and the region. Addressing reporters following the meeting, Harrington said his country will continue its efforts to help Lebanon address the impacts of the Syrian refugee crisis and alleviate the suffering of the refugees.
He appreciated Lebanon’s role in accommodating the huge numbers of refugees and the exemplary treatment of the refugee-hosting Lebanese communities.
On his part, Mashnouq lauded the financial assistance offered by Britain to his government, particularly the aid for the Ministry of Education to ensure continued schooling for the Syrian students.
In December, 2015, British Prime Minister David Cameron announced a plan to admit 20,000 Syrian refugees from Syria neighbors into his country over the following five years.
The number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon ranges between 1.1 million and 1.5 million. (end) wsm.gb
