Australian PM dissolves parliament, calls early election

KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 (KUNA) — Australia’s Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has dissolved parliament, and called an early election set for July 2.
The move came after the Governor General accepted the prime minister’s request to dissolve both houses of parliament.
Following his meeting, Turnbull said he had to dissolve the parliament as the senate declined twice to pass a bill on the accountability of trade unions and business organizations.
Australia will now enter one of the longest election campaigns in the nation’s history, pitting the ruling Coalition against the opposition Labor party.
Polls show that Turnbull’s conservative Coalition is even with or slightly behind Labor. (end)
