‘Winter Sleep’

‘Winter Sleep’The night that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip ErdoIan “taught a lesson” to the whole world in Cologne was the same night Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan won the Palm d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, with his film “Winter Sleep.” Our hearts, overwhelmed by the prime minister’s hours-long Cologne “lecture,” were set free by Ceylan’s one-sentence acceptance speech, in which he dedicated his award to those who died in last year’s Gezi Park protests and the victims of the May 13 Soma mine disaster If possible, every one of us would have watched his latest film the minute he delivered this speech.

Bilge’s words would have been like a cure to our wounds, which have not yet begun to heal. Many people watched the film’s trailer or read its story online that night, prompted by the powerful effect of these two words: Gezi and Soma (NURIYE AKMAN, ZAMAN.
