US medical technologies trade mission on visit to TurkeySeventeen American medical technologies companies led by US Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Global Markets and Director General of the US and Foreign Commercial Service Arun Kumar kicked off a visit to Turkey on Sunday.During the four-day visit until May 8, the mission will travel to Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir to meet with senior Turkish government officials and private associations to facilitate US-Turkey business partnerships.Speaking to reporters on Friday about the visit, Michael A. Lally, counselor for commercial affairs at the US Embassy in Ankara, said the Turkish health-care sector has strong potential for US firms to boost bilateral economic relations.Lally maintained that the goal of the trade mission is to enable participating firms to gain market insight, find new partners in Turkey and establish new partnerships in the neighboring countries of Turkey by addressing what Turkey needs and what American firms can offer in terms of technology and high-quality equipment in health care.“Turkey is an excellent platform [for US firms] to reach out to other markets in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus,” added Lally.“During the past 10 years, Turkey invested nearly $5 billion in health-care construction. A recently announced public-private partnership initiative calls for the construction of 29 integrated health campuses throughout the country. The medical equipment and supplies market in Turkey is projected to reach $3 billion by 2015 as these health campuses are completed,” a US Embassy press release on the event stated.US energy firms looking for strong legal basis to invest in TurkeyOn a question regarding cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector, Lally said US firms are seeking the right conditions before investing in energy due to the sector’s long-term contracts of between 20 to 30 years.Lally also said officials from Turkey led by Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan and Economy Minister Nihat Zeybeki will visit the US in mid-May to attend a Framework for Strategic Economic and Commercial Cooperation (FSECC) meeting.
