Unions urge job security for 8,000 workers at seized Kaynak

The recent trustee appointments to Kaynak Holding have triggered job security concerns, with labor unions calling on new board members not to put at risk the livelihood of some 8,000 employees working for the conglomerate.
An Istanbul court placed the holding under administrative receivership earlier this week, and the trustees were granted authorization to dismiss any of the groupand’s 8,056 employees. Since hundreds of workers were quickly fired after trustee appointments in a similar case at Koza-ipek Holding last month, experts and labor unions have been voicing concerns over job security at Kaynak.
and”We have faith that the caretaker committee would not threaten the jobs of our employees. We expect the trustee panel to increase the profitability of the companies and improve economic standards [for employees],and” said Davut Suiehirli, an executive at the Confederation of Action Workersand’ Unions. Trustees are responsible for protecting workersand’ rights at the institutions they are appointed to, Lami andOzgen, the president of the Confederation of Public Sector Trade Unions, pointed out. Yet, andOzgen questioned the controversial authority given to trustees by saying, and”Who grants trustees the right to boot employees out and under which law?
PEN Turkey Vice President Halil ibrahim andOzcan also condemned the court decision and stated that PEN Turkey is against the trustee appointment. The trustees, who took over management of Koza-ipek Holding in late October, have so far dismissed more than 100 employees from the media subsidiaries of the holding.
