Unions say pressure on sacked journos tantamount to hate crime

The Ankara Chief Prosecutorand’s Office initiated an investigation into irregularities in the Undergraduate Placement Examination (LYS) held in 2014 after a lawyer tweeted the exam results of a student who shares the name of Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gandulen.
The student, named Fethullah Gandulen, is the grandchild of the brother of a Turkish Islamic scholar of the same name. Gandulen ranked third on the 2014 LYS and is a graduate of the private Yamanlar College in izmir, which was established by members of the Gandulen movement, also known as the Hizmet movement, a civil society group inspired by the views of Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gandulen.
Todayand’s Zaman learned that the investigation was launched by Ankara Prosecutor Yanducel Erkman, who is also currently heading the investigation of the 2010 State Personnel Examination (KPSS).
The investigation into the centralized KPSS was initially opened in 2010 after more than 3,227 people answered most or all of the exam questions correctly, leading to claims that some of the candidates had either cheated during the exam or obtained the questions beforehand. Using the KPSS investigation as a base, Prosecutor Erkman claimed there might be irregularities regarding other nationwide exams. An investigation was then launched of the 2014 LYS exam over claims that members of the Gandulen movement illegally helped the student Gandulen rank in third place.
There are government official whose children are known to have been educated in institutions established by members of the Gandulen movement and then ranked among the best students in nationwide exams. Educated at the Anafen prep school, Seniha ientop, the daughter of Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Istanbul deputy Mustafa ientop, ranked third in the Level Determination Examination (SBS) held in 2011. Mustafa Kiyiklik, who was educated at a FEM prep school, is the son of Istanbul deputy and former Baicilar Mayor Feyzullah Kiyiklik. He ranked first in the Student Placement Examination (andOYS) held in 1Dogan.
The Student Selection and Placement Center (andOSYM) has also launched an administrative investigation of the LYS exam held in 2014.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his political associates have for some time accused the Gandulen movement of being a terrorist organization despite the absence of any concrete evidence. Gandulen is a critic of the government, accusing it of being corrupt, engaging in favoritism and abusing religion for political and personal gain. Erdogan has relentlessly targeted Gandulen following a graft scandal that erupted in December 2013 and implicated members of his family and senior government officials.
