UNFPA, ADA University sign MoU

Baku: The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and ADA University have signed a memorandum of understanding.

The document was signed by UN Under-Secretary-General, Executive Director of the UNFPA Babatunde Osotimehin and rector of ADA University Hafiz Pashayev.

The memorandum envisages the joint participation of both sides in the research projects, arrangement of joint conferences, cultural programs and implementation of internship programs for ADA University students in the UN Baku and regional offices.

Before the signing document, UN official Osotimehin addressed ADA University, giving information about the newly-signed Sustainable Development Goals.

He mentioned that Azerbaijan has taken great steps in these spheres.

Azerbaijan has made progress in the involvement of women in the social and political life of the country, Osotimehin said, noting the reduction of maternal mortality during childbirth.

“However, there is still gender discrimination in Azerbaijan. This is not the problem of only Azerbaijan, but the whole world. If this continues, the number of women will drastically decrease after a while”, he said.

He went on to add that the UN stands ready to cooperate with Azerbaijan in implementation of its goals in social development and other fields. “Azerbaijan is located at the intersection of the West and East. The country can become the center of the changes not only in the region but in the world,” the UN official completed.
