Turkish director’s ‘Cold of Kalandar’ wows Tokyo film fest

and”Kalandar Soiuiuand” (Cold of Kalandar), a new dramatic feature by Turkish director Mustafa Kara, won two awards on Saturday at this yearand’s Tokyo International Film Festival, where it was the sole Turkish-language film among the 16 titles in the main competition.
The drama garnered the best director prize for Kara and the WOWOW Viewerand’s Choice Award at the 28th Tokyo International Film Festival, which took place from Oct. 22-31.
Kara received his award from Vietnamese-born French director Tran Anh Hung, a member of this yearand’s panel of judges in Tokyo, which was chaired by director Bryan Singer.
A Turkish-Hungarian co-production that has been in the works since 2010, and”Kalandar Soiuiuand” is the sophomore effort by Kara, who made his feature debut in 2007 with the drama and”Umut Adasiand” (Island of Hope).
and”Kalandar,and” which had its world premiere in Tokyo on Oct. 28, tells of the connection between humankind and nature. The story follows Mehmet (Haydar Siiman), a man living with his family in a mountain village in Turkeyand’s Black Sea region. He earns his life breeding a few animals while looking for a mineral reserve on the mountains, but his pursuit is seen as useless by his family. Destroyed in search of a mineral reserve, his hope is renewed with the news of a competition.
