Turkey’s top military council says channels of dialogue with Russia should be kept open

A statement released following the YAS meeting said the council agreed that “necessary measures should be taken to avoid new undesired negative situations between the armed forces of the two countries by keeping channels of diplomatic and military dialogue with Russia open.

Two Turkish F-16 jets shot down a Russian-made SU-24 near the Syrian border on Tuesday after repeatedly warning it over airspace violations, Turkish officials said on Wednesday. In addition to Davutoglu, Chief of General Staff Gen. Hulusi Akar, Defense Minister İsmet Yılmaz, the commander of the Turkish Land Forces Gen. Salih Zeki Colak, the commander of the Turkish Sea Forces Adm. Bulent Bostanoglu, the commander of the Turkish Air Forces Gen. Abidin Unal and the commander of the Turkish Gendarmerie Forces Gen. Galip Mehdi were among those who attended the meeting.

Civil and military officials discussed the developments on Turkey’s border with Syria, the measures that have been implemented and upcoming military plans. The reports also claim that the officials will discuss the probability of war and whether the military should start preparations for a possible war.

The downing of the warplane has strained Russian-Turkish relations. Moscow claimed that it can prove its jet did not leave Syrian airspace and that it was conducting pre-emptive strikes against terrorists in the region.
