Turkey has more opera houses, less performances, TurkStat report finds

Turkey gained new opera houses — or at least theaters that can accommodate an opera or ballet production — in the 2013-14 season, but the number of performances put on these stages has dropped dramatically, according to recent data from the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat).
The countryand’s new opera stages marked a 25 percent increase in 2014 from the previous season, bringing the total number of such halls across Turkey to 15, the Cihan news agency reported Monday, citing a TurkStat report that looked at the countryand’s opera, ballet, orchestra, chorus and music ensemble statistics.
Yet the number of performances staged in all of Turkeyand’s opera houses dropped by around 20 percent from the previous season, the report found, adding that the number totaled only 188 productions throughout the 2013-14 season. The drop equally affected Turkish productions and adaptations, Cihan reported.
According to the report, by the end of the 2013-14 opera season, all of Turkeyand’s opera houses combined offered a total of 10,288 seats and these seats were sold to a total of 400,420 audience members — around 6.7 percent more than the previous seasonand’s ticket sales.
The report also showed that Turkeyand’s audiences chose adaptations rather than pieces by Turkish composers. Admission to local pieces dropped by 16 percent in 2014 while adapted works attracted 38.9 percent more opera-goers than the previous season.
The comprehensive report also looked at gender statistics among performers. It said 41.3 percent of all 412 musicians employed by orchestras under the Culture and Tourism Ministryand’s Fine Arts Directorate-General were female while 38.1 percent of all 701 chorus singers were female. The biggest number of female performers is among opera singers, with 53.9 percent, the report found.
All of Turkeyand’s state-run orchestras combined played a total of 212 concerts throughout the 2013-14 season. The number of concerts performed didnand’t change from the 2012-13 season, although the number of concert-goers dropped by 7.5 percent, the report added.
