A total of 680 women have been murdered in Turkey over the last two-and-a-half years, according to a report titled and”Violence Against Womenandquot released on Thursday by the Research Center for Security Strategies (GanduSAM).
According to the report, 237 women were murdered in 2013 and 294 were killed in 2014. The report also included the first six months of 2015, stating that 149 women had been killed within the six-month period, marking 14 more than the previous year in the same time frame. The report also stated that 132 women have been the victims of violence due to the lack of enforcement of the laws that are in place regarding shelters and protection provided for victims of domestic abuse.
The rampant violence against women continues despite the official introduction of Law No. 6284 in March 2012, which seeks to prevent and combat violence against women. Moreover, the law specifically states that the state must provide appropriate shelter to victims and, if necessary, to victimsand’ children in the vicinity or in some other location. The law also states that, at the request of the victim or ex officio, temporary protection must be provided for the victim if they face life-threatening danger. The report has stated that the law has not been adequately enforced and resulted in the continuation of violence.
