Top court annuls provisions of law barring convicts from being elected

The Cankırı 1st Criminal Court of First Instance appealed to the Constitutional Court asking for the annulment of certain provisions of the article in question. The top court reviewed the matter and decided that the provisions were in violation of the Constitution.

In its decision the Constitutional Court underlined that depriving convicts of the right to be elected as deputies marks a serious violation of rights and should not constitute an obstacle for prospective candidates from any political party.

The court also emphasized that not recognizing convicts’ ability to exercise their political rights is contrary to the principles of the rule of law.
