Christov-Bakargiev begins work on Istanbul Biennial’s conceptual framAmerican-Italian art historian and curator Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev will prepare the conceptual framework of the 14th Istanbul Biennial, set to run from Sept. 5 to Nov.

1 of next year, the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV) announced in a press release on Tuesday. The announcement about the biennial’s framework was set to be made on May 14, but the IKSV postponed it to Tuesday in light of the national mourning for 301 miners who were killed in a mining disaster in the southwestern town of Soma last week.

According to the press release, Christov-Bakargiev will benefit from Turkish visual artist Cevdet Erek’s artistic aice, South African-Canadian art historian Griselda Pollock’s intellectual rigor, French artist Pierre Huyghe’s sensibility, Spanish curator Chus Martinez’s curatorial imagination, English production designer Marcos Lutyens’ cautiousness and Turkish avant-garde artist Fusun Onur’s acute gaze in preparing the framework.Christov-Bakargiev, who was the art director of Germany’s contemporary exhibition “dOCUMENTA (13),” will also use Armenian-Egyptian artist Anna Boghiguian’s political philosophy, Vietnamese-German curator Arlette Quynh-Anh Tran’s enthusiasm and South African artist William Kentridge’s wise uncertainty as her other sources while working for the biennial, states the IKSV.
