Tahir Elci laid to rest in Diyarbakir

The head of Diyarbakir Bar Association, Tahir Elci, who was killed in attack during press release in Diyarbakir on Saturday, was laid to rest at Yenikoy graveyard in the southeastern district of Diyarbakir’s Baglar on Sunday.

A memorial ceremony was held in front of the Human Rights Monument in Kosuyolu Park with the attendance of thousands of people.

As the funeral cortege made its way to the Yenikoy cemetery for his burial, many of those gathered chanted slogans, such as, “Martyrs don’t die,” and Diyarbakir residents lent their voices and applauses from the surrounding apartment balconies.

After being carried on shoulders about one-kilometer, the funeral of Elci was buried following the afternoon prayer.

Noticeably, not any governor or any members of ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) attended the funeral. Along with the United States Adana consul Linda Specht, many of non-governmental organizations’ and human rights organizations’ representatives attended the funeral.
