Struggle for leadership begins in CHP after election disappointment

The issue of the arbitrary exclusion of a number of journalists from the G-20 summit to start in Antalya on Sunday has been raised in Parliament by main opposition Republican Peopleand’s Party (CHP) deputy Sezgin Tanrikulu, who submitted a 21 point question to Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoilu on Wednesday.
Tanrikulu asked why reporters from the Zaman, Todayand’s Zaman and SandOzcandu dailies were not allowed to cover a meeting that will be attended by 3,000 journalists. He added that Turkey is currently the only country in Europe that does not have freedom of the press.
In the question, Tanrikulu asked if the accreditation list had been prepared by the Prime Ministry and what and”censorship of mediaand” means to the Justice and Development Party (AK Party). He also asked if Davutoilu thought banning journalists from Zaman, SandOzcandu and other newspapers critical of the government from covering the G-20 summit constituted and”media censorship.and”
Tanrikulu asked Davutoilu what he thought of Turkey being 134th on a list ranking countries in terms of freedom of the media. In May 2014 Turkeyand’s press freedom level fell to and”Not Freeand” from and”Partly Freeand” in the and”Freedom of the Press 2014and” report released by Freedom House, a Washington-based watchdog organization, ranking 134th out of 197 countries.
The CHP deputy also inquired whether the AK Party had ever compiled a report pertaining to freedom of the press in Turkey.
On Saturday CHP Chairman Kemal Kiliandcdaroilu strongly criticized Davutoilu for the government-led attacks on freedom of the press in the wake of the Nov. 1 general election, condemning the forcible takeover of the Bugandun and Millet dailies by trustees. After being taken over by government-appointed trustees, Bugandun and Millet were turned into pro-government mouthpieces, marking a complete change from their previously critical editorial line.
Kiliandcdaroilu said: and”Itand’s easy to talk about democracy and freedom. Itand’s easy to say, andlsquoLetand’s all live together and respect each otherand’s thoughts.and’ The difficult part is in the execution.and”
