State Committee: Use of religious flags in mosques – unacceptable

Baku: The use of religious flags in mosques is unacceptable, Mubariz Gurbanli, the chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations, told APA.

He made the remarks commenting on the fact that some forces abused people’s religious beliefs during the day of Ashura.

Gurbanli said Azerbaijan is an independent state and it has the law on the state flag.

“At the same time, we will make a proposal along with religious figures to avoid holding religious ceremonies in streets. Religious ceremonies should be held in the mosque or in the courtyard of the mosque. Religious ceremonies of other religions are held in churches and synagogues. Those who want to hold any rally must obtain permission from the relevant executive authorities. There is a law on freedom of assembly and it doesn’t run contrary to the law on freedom of religion,” he noted.

Gurbanli also touched upon the incident that occurred in Ganja on the day of Ashura.

“We have already investigated the incident. There are some groups seeking to carry out their objectives under the guise of religion. Certain preventive measures have been taken and will be taken in the future. They have no social support either. Simply, they attempted to use the religious beliefs of people and this is unacceptable,” he said.
