SOCAR Foster Wheeler Company will complete pre-FEED of the project on increasing the capacity of the primary oil refining unit at the Baku Oil Refinery named after Heydar Aliyev soon.

Azerbaijan’s state energy giant SOCAR reported on November 25 that the unit capacity will be increased from 6 million to 7.5 million tons per year.

“SOCAR Foster Wheeler has determined the technical configuration of the primary oil refining unit as a result of the pre-FEED surveys,” the company said. “The technical data was simulated using Aspentech Hysys v.7.3 and Promax 3.2 programs. The PMC technical capabilities of the project contractor – Fluor Company were also used during the project implementation.”

The pre-FEED stage will be completed in the near future. Afterwards, the FEED stage will begin.

Modernization of the Baku Oil Refinery named after Heydar Aliyev will be complete by the end of 2018. The refinery processing capacity will increase from 6 to 7.5 million tons per year after reconstruction. The cost of modernization is estimated at $1 billion.

SOCAR announced about the elimination of Azneftyag refinery and merging it with the Heydar Aliyev Baku Oil Refinery in January 2015.

This decision was taken as part of the work to improve and optimize SOCAR’s structure.

Azerbaijan produced over 5.31 million tons of oil in 2014 compared to 5.09 million tons of oil in 2013.

Earlier, as part of the modernization of the Baku Oil Refinery named after Heydar Aliyev, SOCAR signed an agreement with Austrian Poerner, French Axens and the U.S. UOP Company
