SINAN – Lifting of flight price ceiling causes concern

Lifting of flight price ceiling causes concernDomestic airplane passengers are concerned over the removal of a TL 299 domestic flight price ceiling last month, saying that ticket prices are increasing drastically as the summer season approaches. In November 2013 the price ceiling was agreed upon by the Ministry of Transportation, Maritime Affairs and Communications in conjunction with airlines operating domestic routes in Turkey, including Turkish Airlines (THY), Pegasus Airlines, Borajet, Atlasjet, Sun Express and Onur Air. The lifting of the price ceiling has resulted in a quick acceleration of prices, with some reports of flights costing as much as TL 500 during the final days of ticket sales when limited seats are available.Passenger Cihan YIlmaz, who was en route to Ankara from Istanbul Ataturk Airport, said tickets between Turkey’s largest city and its capital now cost TL 360. “TIckets used to be around TL 180-200, but now they cost TL 360, which is quite high. Perhaps this is due to the start of the busy summer season. The lifting of the price ceiling has really affected prices. Bus companies charge TL 45-50 for a ticket, and now plane tickets cost six times that amount. Airline companies say you can find tickets for TL 49 or 69 if you purchase six months in aance, but that isn’t actually the case,” YIlmaz told Today’s Zaman.unal Sivri, who frequently travels by plane between Istanbul and the southern province of Hatay, told Today’s Zaman that the huge price difference between airline tickets and bus tickets may force him to start traveling by coach.
