Police seal off lucrative brick plant in Bayburt

In another wave of oppression against even suspected critics of the government, Turkish police suspended the operations of a brick plant in the northeastern province of Bayburt.
At the behest of the provincial governor, the police, on Tuesday, sealed off the plant of Baykes Tuila in which 150,000 workers produced 150,000 tons of brick a day.
Speaking to the Cihan News Agency, the company lawyer Serkan Pekmezci said, and”The plant was inspected for safety by Ministry of Labor and Social Security inspectors on Nov. 5, and we were given an inspection report of the deficiencies, none of which were life threatening.and”
Even though the company immediately started to fix the flaws, the governor ordered that it cease all activity, Pekmezci said.
The general manager and the owner of Baykes Tuila, Ali Haydar Karabacak said all his activities were legal and proper and that he expected proper treatment in return. Karabacak is said to be close to the faith-based Gandulen Movement, against which the government has been pursuing a protracted intimidation campaign since the revelation of sweeping corruption allegations in late 2013.
