ISTANBUL (CIHAN)- Police, protesters clash in Istanbul over traffic signs
Police fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse angry crowd who blocked a highway in Esenyurt district in western Istanbul on Thursday night, demanding authorities install traffic light and a speed bump after a woman killed a day earlier in the area.

The group of protesters gathered at around 5 p.m. on Thursday on Fatih Sultan Mehmet Avenue in TalatpaIa neighborhood and staged a demonstration to protest the death of Nahire Altan, who was killed in a traffic accident on Wednesday. The protesters demanded authorities to put traffic lights and speed bumps in the area to prevent reckless driving.

The protesters initially blocked merging roads with trash containers and pavement stones, but later block the entire highway. Police warned the protesters to clear the highway. Defiant protesters refused to heed the warnings and started to hurl rocks and plastic water bottles on police. Another group of rioters set a roadside police booth on fire.

Police tolerated the protesters until 10 p.m. and later fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse the protesters. The clashes escalated after protesters responded by throwing stones and sticks on the riot police. To prevent events from spinning out of control, organizers of the protest met with police chiefs in charge and urged the protesters to leave.

After the clashes ended, municipality workers started cleaning the road.
