Police inspector, civilian killed as result of clashes in tense Cizre district

The inspector, Umut Tuncay, was seriously injured when a group of PKK terrorists opened fire on a police vehicle that was on patrol on İpek Road near the Yafes neighborhood on Tuesday. The injured police inspector subsequently died at Cizre State Hospital. Police then launched an operation in the neighborhood following the attack and briefly closed Ipek Road.

A civilian who worked for the Sırnak Police Department was also wounded during clashes that erupted after PKK terrorists opened fire on workers who were building a concrete barrier around the Hayati Bilgin border outpost in Cizre on Tuesday. The civilian, Sabri Oglak, died in a local hospital.

Tuncay was laid to rest after a funeral in Ankara on Wednesday, and Oglak was buried in his hometown in Sırnak province the same day.

Following these two attacks, the Sırnak Governor’s Office imposed a curfew in the Yafes and Sur neighborhoods as of 4 p.m. on Tuesday. The curfew was lifted at 6 a.m. on Wednesday.

The governor’s office also stated that five PKK terrorists were killed during police operations launched after the attacks.

Turkey began pounding PKK targets in southeast Anatolia and northern Iraq on July 24 after two police officers were killed by the terrorist group, apparently in retaliation for a suicide bombing on July 20 that killed 33 pro-Kurdish activists and was blamed on the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Violence has escalated sharply since then, with the PKK stepping up attacks on security forces in southeastern Anatolia. The terrorist group has also been blocking many roads in the region.
