Police fire tear gas to people showing solidarity with arrested journalists

Ankara police fired tear gas to disperse large numbers of people including deputies from the Republican People’s Party (CHP) who gathered in front of Cumhuriyet daily to show solidarity with arrested journalists on Friday.

After the court decided arrest of editor-in-chief of Cumhuriyet daily Can Dundar and daily’s Ankara representative Erdem Gul, people marched to Ankara headquarters of the daily. Taking security measures in the area, police warned people to stop. A fight broke out between the demonstrators and police when some attempted to overcome police barricades. Police dispersed crowd harshly by firing tear gas.

The tension has not ended in the area.
