A blaze erupted early on Wednesday in the Museum and Exhibition Hall at the Atatandurk Forestry Farm (AOandc).
Night watchmen in the hall saw the fire and informed the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department. The blaze broke out at approximately 1:30 a.m. from unknown causes.
Police officers and fire teams were dispatched to the AOandc, situated in Ankaraand’s Yenimahalle district. The fire was brought under control after more than an hour.
The AOandc, often called the lungs of Ankara, is an expansive recreational farming area that hosts a zoo, a dairy farm and a brewery as well as several small farms, greenhouses and restaurants. It was donated to the state by Mustafa Kemal Atatandurk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, in 1937.
The Museum and Exhibition Hall was put into service on May 6, 2010, on the 85th anniversary of the AOandcand’s creation.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoganand’s Ak Saray, which is touted as the worldand’s largest presidential palace, was constructed inside the AOandc on an area of 300,000 square meters that was labeled a SIT or environmentally protected area, where construction should be restricted or forbidden.
Although many critics have said the construction of the presidential palace in the AOandc was illegal, President Erdogan, who was prime minister at the time of construction, ignored a number of court orders to halt the building of the palace.
