Over 500 shacks burnt in massive fire in Kya Sands

A fire which took place in Msawawa informal settlement in Kya Sand, with strong winds destroyed more than 500 houses on Thursday.

Aid organizations and Gauteng government have been providing help to around 300 families who were displaced due to the fire. Some of the people are building new houses by their own means. Speaking to Cihan news agency, Gauteng Social Development official Thami Charles stated that the fire which erupted at 4 p.m. spread quickly to the whole settlement. No injuries or causalities have been reported in the incident so far.

Domizana Lichun, one of the resident whose house was burnt in the fire claimed that the fire broke out when one of the residents left his stove opened.
