OKAN UDO – Season ends for champ Fener, relegated Kayseri

Season ends for champ Fener, relegated KayseriThe curtain falls on the 2013-14 Spor Toto Super League season for demoted Kayserispor and newly crowned Fenerbahe, aka the Yellow Canaries, after their last match in week 34 at Kadir Has Stadium in Kayseri on Friday evening. This is indeed a game of two extremes: Cellar-dweller and relegated Kayserispor, the team with the worst offense and defense in the league, is hosting Fenerbahe, a team adorned with superlatives. The Canaries boast the best offense, best scoring record and third-best defense. The last entertaining the first: The result may be seen as a foregone conclusion. But that may not be the case on Friday because Ersun Yanal, the coach of a Fenerbahe intoxicated by victory, may be forced to field a weakened side against Kayserispor. The Fener players whose countries qualified for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, which kicks off on June 12, have already returned home to prepare for this football extravaganza. They include striker Emmanuel Emenike, who has gone to Nigeria, defender Bruno Alves, who has flown to Portugal, and second striker Dirk Kuyt, who has left for the Netherlands.Yanal, therefore, may have to dig deep into his reserves to fill the vacuum created by the absence of these regulars. The Fenerbahe coach may bring in rising star Salih Uan in place of Emenike, attacking midfielder Mehmet Topuz to fill in for Alves and super sub Seluk Iahin to the midfield and move Mehmet Topal to the back to do the donkey work of defending.Whether this tactic will work is not known. However, what is known for sure is that the Canaries, no matter who is fielded, want to end the season not with a whimper but with a bang.Beware of Kayseri A man who has lost everything is capable of anything — and that indeed is Kayserispor. And so the Anatolian side, which is preparing for life in the second division next season, is not expected to just lie down and allow the Canaries to roll over them.Yes, Kayserispor is down and out. However, the team, which is still “headless” following the departure of 45-year-old Portuguese trainer Domingos Paciencia in March, will earn some respect if it can conquer the defending champion in the season’s finale — but that’s a big if. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. and the referee will be Deniz oban. The other Super League clash on Friday pits EskiIehirspor against Torku Konyaspor in a game that will be played behind closed doors at EskiIehir’s Ataturk Stadium. Both teams have no relegation worries, and EskiIehirspor will be playing in the UEFA Europa League qualifiers next season by virtue of being a losing finalist in the Ziraat Turkish Cup. Friday’s match is therefore expected to be played in a very relaxed mood because only pride and prestige are at stake. The match, which starts at 8 p.m., will be refereed by Mustafa IretmenoIlu.The Super League season actually comes to a close on Sunday, but the four teams in action on Friday will start their holiday a little earlier than the others.
