No burn units in Soma where hundreds of miners killed in fire

ISTANBUL (CIHAN)- Miners who were injured from an explosion and fire at a coal mine in Manisa’s Soma district that left at least 300 miners dead and hundreds trapped underground were transferred to other districts or provinces as there is no burn unit at Soma State Hospital.

According to media reports, some injured miners were transferred to the Kocaeli Derince Teaching and Research Hospital’s burn unit after they waited for eight hours at Soma State Hospital, where there is no such unit.

Releasing a written statement on Wednesday, the Revolutionary Mineral Research and Exploitation Workers’ Union (DEV-MADEN-SEN) — which is affiliated with the Confederation of Revolutionary Workers’ Unions (DISK) — criticized the government for not establishing a special medical unit to treat miners rescued from the mine. The statement read: “There has not yet been any special medical unit established in Soma where 15,000 miners are working by the state to provide medical treatment to those miners who are rescued. There is also no burn unit at the state hospital in Soma.”
